Prompt [Pond]ering

Description

In the context of using AI tools to envision urban spaces, the selection of keywords has a significant influence on the direction and quality of the generated outcomes. Designers familiar with AI often rely on idiosyncratic vocabulary systems, which can lead to creative limitations. "ArchiPodcastHK" conducted street interviews to explore the public's imagination of an ideal community, discovering that most expressions tend to be abstract and challenging to translate.

Prompt [Pond]ering invites participants to engage interactively by drawing random keyword combinations, encouraging them to contribute new terms that allow the vocabulary pool to evolve continuously. As architectural design is inherently a dynamic language that transforms concepts into reality through iterative translation, this work explores the design process in the era of human-machine collaboration. It examines how the "ZOU-MAT" craftsmanship of creation merges with technology, highlighting the varying degrees of human and technical input while emphasising the interplay between human creativity and technical precision.

The game-like format of this work aims to provoke public reflection on the essence of design, igniting imagination regarding community transformation. By facilitating innovative experimental combinations of prompting keywords and integrating AI-generated imagery, participants gain a more intuitive understanding of how their word choices impact spatial imagination. Furthermore, it encourages a reconsideration of how language guides our spatial perceptions and the evolving roles and potentials of individuals within technology-driven participatory design, fostering collaborative efforts to construct a more representative community.

Biography

ArchiPodcastHK
ArchiPodcastHK is a Cantonese-language podcast focused on discussing design, architecture, and lifestyle, aiming to make design thinking more accessible to the general public while catalysing connections among aspiring individuals and promoting community change. The show was co-founded during the pandemic in 2020 by Tidus Shing in Melbourne and Charon Lung in Hong Kong, with episodes broadcast online every two weeks. The podcast actively collaborates with other design entities to promote creativity and explore the value and application of sound and discussion as design methods.

ZOU-MAT
Charis Mok and Jesse Hao co-founded the design and production studio ZOU-MAT in 2021, dedicated to exploring sustainable design solutions. Charis serves as the architectural director, focusing on the design of large residential projects, campus developments, and commercial buildings, integrating materials and light to create spatial beauty. Jesse, the production director, emphasises practical methods and interdisciplinary collaboration, crafting custom furniture and art installations. Through ZOU-MAT, they continually push the boundaries of design and production, combining cutting-edge technology with environmental awareness to enhance innovation in spatial design.
